The alginate and Pel pathways share characteristics of a lipid-carrier-independent mechanism similar to the biosynthetic complexes of bacterial cellulose and Pga systems. A lipid-carrier-dependent mechanism is consistent with the Psl pathway, comparable to the E. coli capsular synthesis pathways.
