OBJECTIVE: To investigate the antidepressant-like effect of glycyrrhizin (glycyrrhizic acid ammonium) in mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Glycyrrhizin (1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 mg/kg, i.p.) was administered once daily for seven successive days to separate groups of young male Swiss albino mice. The immobility periods of control and treated mice were recorded in forced swim test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST). Effect of sulpiride (50 mg/kg, i.p.; a selective D2 receptor antagonist), prazosin (62.5 µg… Expand
EVALUATION OF ANTIDEPREESANT LIKE ACTIVITY OF SILYMARIN IN ALBINO MICE
TLDR
It is suggested that silymarin possess potential antidepressant effects which could be of therapeutic interest for using in the treatment of depressive disorders. Expand
Evaluation of antidepressant-like effect of hydroalcoholic extract of Passiflora incarnata in animal models of depression in male mice
TLDR
PI has considerable antidepressant-like effect in animal models of depression, however, further studies are needed to determine its exact mechanism of action. Expand
Evaluation of antidepressant activity of tramadol in mice
TLDR
The results of the present study indicate antidepressant like activity of tramadol. Expand
EVALUATION OF ANTIDEPRESSANT ACTIVITY OF TOPIRAMATE IN MICE
TLDR
Topiramate at a dose of 15 mg/kg has demonstrated antidepressant activity which was comparable to amitriptyline and there was synergism in antidepressant activity of topiramate and amitcriptyline. Expand
Effect of rhizome extract of Acorus calamus on depressive condition induced by forced swimming in mice
TLDR
The results of the present study suggest that the extract of A. calamus rhizome has antidepressant-like activity which is mediated by modulating the central neurochemical as well as HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis in response to stress induced by FST, and may be used as a valuable herbal supplement for the treatment of depression related conditions. Expand
EVALUATION OF SUBACUTE ANTIDEPRESSANT ACTIVITY OF ALOCASIA MACRORRHIZOS ON MICE
TLDR
It is concluded from the results of the study that hydroalcoholic extract of leaves of Alocasia macrorrhizos has the definite antidepressant effect which is comparable to Imipramine at 250mg/kg dose. Expand
Evaluation of Antidepressant Activity of Granisetron in Albino Mice
TLDR
It is shown that graniosetron has antidepressant like action, which may be because of its antagonism at the 5-HT3 receptor site and that it may be used as an alternative for the treatment of depression. Expand
Antidepressant-like effects of liquiritin and isoliquiritin from Glycyrrhiza uralensis in the forced swimming test and tail suspension test in mice
TLDR
In conclusion, liquiritin and isoliquiritin produced significant antidepressant-like effects, and their mechanism of action may be due to increased 5-HT and NE in the mouse hippocampus, hypothalamus and cortex. Expand
ANTIDEPRESSANT ACTIVITY OF METHANOLIC EXTRACT OF VERBENA OFFICINALIS LINN. PLANT IN MICE
ABSTRACT Objective: The objective was to investigate the antidepressant activity of methanolic extract of leaves of Verbena officinalis Linn. (MEVO) in mice. Methods: The present study evaluates theExpand
EVALUATION OF ANTICONVULSANT AND ANTIDEPRESSANT ACTIVITY OF EPIC - Q TAB: AN AYURVEDIC POLY HERBAL FORMULATION
TLDR
It is found that the polyherbal formulation Epic - Q has anticonvulsant and anti depressant activity and it has potent an tidepressant action and it shows moderately significant action. Expand

Antithrombotic effect of Glycyrrhizin, a plant-derived thrombin inhibitor.
TLDR
Data indicate that GL is an effective thrombin inhibitor in vivo, which may account for its other known pharmacological properties, and is able to prevent thrombosis using an arteriovenous shunt model. Expand
In vitro anti-Helicobacter pylori activity of Extractum liquiritiae, glycyrrhizin and its metabolites.
TLDR
The potent in vitro activity of GA against H. pylori provides a further explanation for its beneficial effect on peptic ulcers, and its effectiveness against clarithromycin-resistant strains provides hope that it can form the basis for an alternative therapeutic agent against H-pylori. Expand

TLDR
It is not possible, on the basis of existing data, to determine precisely the minimum level of glycyrrhizic acid required to produce the described symptoms, but an uneven consumption pattern suggests that a considerable number of individuals who consume large amounts of liquorice sweets are exposed to the risk of developing adverse effects. Expand
Mechanism of anti-inflammatory action of glycyrrhizin: effect on neutrophil functions including reactive oxygen species generation.
TLDR
The present study indicates that glycyrrhizin is not an ROS scavenger but exerts an anti-inflammatory action by inhibiting the generation of ROS by neutrophils, the most potent inflammatory mediator at the site of inflammation. Expand
Behavioural despair in rats: a new model sensitive to antidepressant treatments.
TLDR
Positive findings with atypical antidepressant drugs such as iprindole and mianserin suggest that the method may be capable of discovering new antidepressants hitherto undetectable with classical pharmacological tests. Expand
Short review on monoamine oxidase and its inhibitors.
Since monoamine oxidase is an enzyme catalyzing bioactive monoamines, inhibitors of monoamines are expected to prolong the activity of monoamines in tissue. Monoamine oxidase type B is an active formExpand
Inhibition of 11β‐hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase by bile acids in rats with cirrhosis
TLDR
In cirrhosis, the MR‐protecting effect by 11β‐HSD2 is diminished, and therefore, endogenous glucocorticoids can induce MR‐mediated sodium retention and potassium loss. Expand

Clinical and biochemical manifestations of depression. Relation to the neurobiology of stress (2)
TLDR
Whereas psychopharmacologic intervention may be required to resolve an active episode of major depression and to prevent recurrences, psychotherapy may be equally important to lessen the burden of stress imposed by intense inner conflict and counterproductive defenses. Expand
