We present deep R and narrowband H α images of Arp 78 obtained with the WIYN 3.5 m telescope on Kitt Peak. GALEX observations had shown a very extended UV structure for this system, reaching beyond the optical radius of Arp 78 and also beyond its previously known Hα radius. Our new H α data now show agreement not only with the spatial extent of the near- and far-UV maps, but also in terms of structural details. Star formation rates derived from L(Hα) and L(FUV) are in reasonable agreement… Expand

A Method for Measuring Variations in the Stellar Initial Mass Function
We present a method for investigating variations in the upper end of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) by probing the production rate of ionizing photons in unresolved, compact star clustersExpand
AN INITIAL MASS FUNCTION FOR INDIVIDUAL STARS IN GALACTIC DISKS. I. CONSTRAINING THE SHAPE OF THE INITIAL MASS FUNCTION
We derive a semi-empirical galactic initial mass function (IMF) from observational constraints. We assume that the IMF, {psi}(m), is a smooth function of the stellar mass m. The mass dependence ofExpand

Recent star formation in the extreme outer disk of M83
Ultraviolet imaging with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) has revealed an extensive sample of UV-bright stellar complexes in the extreme outer disk of M83, extending to about 4 times the radiusExpand
Radial variation of attenuation and star formation in the largest late-type disks observed with GALEX
For a sample of 43 nearby, late-type galaxies, we have investigated the radial variation of both the current star formation rate and the dust-induced UV light attenuation. To do this we haveExpand
ULTRAVIOLET EXTINCTION PROPERTIES IN THE MILKY WAY
We have assembled a homogeneous database of 417 ultraviolet (UV) extinction curves for reddened sight lines having International Ultraviolet Explorer spectra. We have combined these with optical andExpand
Comparison of H II region luminosities with observed stellar ionizing sources in the Large Magellanic Cloud
We estimate the total predicted Lyc emission rates of OB associations for which the complete census of O star spectral types exists. The results are compared to the observed H-alpha luminosities ofExpand
Discovery of Recent Star Formation in the Extreme Outer Regions of Disk Galaxies
We present deep Hα images of three nearby late-type spiral galaxies (NGC 628, NGC 1058, and NGC 6946), which reveal the presence of H II regions out to, and beyond, two optical radii (defined by theExpand
DISCOVERY OF AN EXTENDED ULTRAVIOLET DISK IN THE NEARBY GALAXY NGC 4625
Recent far-UV (FUV) and near-UV (NUV) observations of the nearby galaxy NGC 4625 made by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) show the presence of an extended UV disk reaching to 4 times the opticalExpand
Absorption-line strengths of 18 late-type spiral galaxies observed with SAURON

Ultraviolet emission from stellar populations within tidal tails: Catching the youngest galaxies in formation?
New Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) observations have detected significant far-UV (FUV; 1530 A) and near-UV (NUV; 2310 A) emission from stellar substructures within the tidal tails of four ongoingExpand
