Peroxynitrite is a cytotoxic oxidant produced during shock, ischemia reperfusion, and inflammation. The cellular events mediating the cytotoxic effect of peroxynitrite include activation of poly(ADP-ribose) synthetase, inhibition of mitochondrial respiration, and activation of caspase-3.
