These colors are so frequent in hummingbird-pollinated orchids that they may be considered a part of the syndrome of hummingbird pollination. These colors probably reduce the contrast between the pollinia and the bird's beak, and thus avoid stimulating the bird to clean its beak before effecting pollination. It would be of interest to observe the reactions of captive birds to pollinia of different colors.
