The annual reproductive cycle has been investigated in the male pipistrelle bat Pipistrellus pipistrellus. Spermatogenesis occurs during summer and spermatozoa are produced in August and September. The seminiferous tubules then regress rapidly but sperm are stored throughout winter in the cauda epididymidis.
