The genus Sarcophyton is an abundant soft coral on the marginal, high-latitude reefs in KwaZulu-Natal. A 2-year study on reproduction in the most common species,S. glaucum, revealed that gametogenesis in male and female colonies takes 9–10 and 16–18 mo, respectively, in this gonochoric, seasonal, broadcast spawner. Gametogenesis and spawning are synchronised in and between colonies, and with other common soft corals on the reefs. Spawning occurs annually in March between full and new moon with…
Sexual reproduction of the soft coral Dendronephthya castanea (Alcyonacea: Nephtheidae)
TLDR
Investigation of the morphological taxonomy and molecular biology of these species indicates that they have very similar or identical traits, suggesting an absence of speciation and a need for taxonomic reclassification.
Reproductive features of the Red Sea octocoral Sarcophyton auritum Verseveldt & Benayahu, 1978 are uniform within generic boundaries across wide biogeographical regions
TLDR
The findings indicate that the reproductive features of Sarcophyton soft corals are consistent within the genus, thus supporting the tested hypothesis of the study that among reefsoft corals these features are consistentWithin generic boundaries across all Indo-Pacific regions studied so far.
Sexual reproduction of anthoplexaura dimorpha (Gorgonacea: Octocorallia) from Munseom, Jejudo islands, Korea
TLDR
The morphology and cycle of gametogenesis of gorgonian coral Anthoplexaura dimorpha Kûkenthal, 1908 suggested broadcast spawning for the reproductive mode in this species, and the possible spawning events may occur after the seawater temperature attain to the annual peak in September.
Occurrence of simultaneous hermaphrodite in the “gonochoric” octocoral Heliopora coerulea (Pallas, 1766)
TLDR
The first occurrence of simultaneous hermaphrodites in Helioporacea, Octocorallia is reported and it is suggested that hermAPHrodites provide an opportunity for self-fertilization and reduce reproductive wastage in that species.
Sexual reproduction in octocorals
TLDR
Differences in reproductive characteristics between the 2 taxa do not offer an obvious explanation for these differentBiogeographic patterns of reproductive biology within Octocorallia.
Comparisons of sexual reproduction in Carijoa riisei (Cnidaria, Alcyonacea) in South Atlantic, Caribbean, and Pacific areas
TLDR
This species was found to have similar reproduction patterns in Brazil, the Caribbean, and in Hawaii (a gonochoric reproductive pattern and continuous and asynchronous gamete release), which contribute to its rapid proliferation and occupation of spaces left by other species, independent of its native or non-native status.
Growth Rate Assessment of Alcyonacean Sarcophyton glaucum from Northern Hurghada, Red Sea, Egypt
TLDR
Eighteen specimens of the soft coral Sarcophyton glaucum have been collected and tagged to determine the growth rate using the weight variations technique and to investigate the reproductive season histologically, where the Autozooid polyps are the reproductive organs while siphonozooids are sterile.
Sexual Reproduction of Mediterranean Scleractinian Corals
TLDR
Investigating how reproductive processes are affected by changing environmental conditions under different future scenarios of stress levels (in mesocosm or in field experiments), could help to identify important processes that may have been overlooked in the past.

SURFACE BROODING IN THE RED SEA SOFT CORAL PARERYTHROPODIUM FULVUM FULVUM (FORSKÅL, 1775).
TLDR
It is suggested that surface brooding is an adaptation to the encrusting shape of the colony and it maximizes fecundity, which protects the offspring during embryogenesis.
Reproduction in Anthelia glauca (Octocorallia: Xeniidae). I. Gametogenesis and larval brooding
TLDR
The authors' data suggest that egg transfer and fertilization occur at full moon and the mature larvae are released after new moon, and Zooxanthellae are absent in A. glauca oocytes, but zooxanthella infestation commences at the immature larval stage.
Sexual reproduction in the coral Pocillopora verrucosa (Cnidaria: Scleractinia) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
TLDR
P. verrucosa is a simultaneous hermaphrodite and broadcast spawner in KwaZulu-Natal and Gametogenesis occurs from October to January, with the gametes maturing simultaneously so that spawning can be synchronised at new moon in January.
Evidence for broadcast spawning as well as brooding in the scleractinian coral Pocillopora damicornis

  • 1992
TLDR
The reproductive activity of 88 colonies of Pocillopora damicornis at Rottnest Island, Western Australia, was examined and it is suggested that the decline in the percentage of polyps with sperm and eggs was not due to the gametes being resorbed by the polyps.
Reef coral reproduction in the eastern Pacific: Costa Rica, Panama, and Galapagos Islands (Ecuador)
TLDR
While frequent gamete maturation has been demonstrated in this study, the relatively low rates of larval recruitment occurring on eastern Pacific coral reefs disturbed by the 1982–83 El Niño suggest that the recovery of important frame-building corals could be greatly prolonged.
A MOLECULAR PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS OF REPRODUCTIVE TRAIT EVOLUTION IN THE SOFT CORAL GENUS ALCYONIUM
TLDR
A molecular phylogeny for 14 European and North American species of Alcyonium suggests that hermaphroditism or parthenogenesis has evolved independently at least twice in this genus, and always in internally brooding species, and evolutionary transitions between broadcast spawning and brooding and between gonochorism and herm Aphrodites can occur easily and rapidly in this group.
Slow population turnover in the soft coral genera Sinularia and Sarcophyton on mid- and outer-shelf reefs of the Great Barrier Reef
TLDR
Rates of recruitment by larval settlement were very low in a majority of the soft coral taxa, and the general assumption that soft corals are fast-growing pioneers does not apply to the Alcyoniidae on the central Great Barrier Reef, where their life history traits indicate great persistence.
A Revision Of The Genus Sarcophyton Lesson (Octocorallia, Alcyonacea)
TLDR
Among the species described in the present paper there is a new one: S. buitendijki, a new species in the genus Sarcophyton that may help with the identification of the corals.

Biodiversity on the marginal coral reefs of South Africa: What does the future hold?
TLDR
Current monitoring on the South African reefs is being expanded to investigate the extent to which they will elucidate the future of more typical reefs, as Published projections on the long-term effects of climate change indicate that more reefs will become marginal as a result of global warming.
