Suppose G = G(R) is the group of real points of a complex connected reductive algebraic group, and K is a maximal compact subgroup of G. The classical branching problem here is to determine the restriction to K of a standard representation of G. Implicit in the branching problem are the problems of parametrizing both irreducible representations of K and standard representations of G. We address these three problems, looking for answers amenable to computer implementation.
