Activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) is a single-stranded (ss) DNA deaminase required for somatic hypermutation (SHM) and class switch recombination of immunoglobulin genes. Class switch recombination involves transcription through switch regions, which generates ssDNA within R loops.
