Tumor cells that express a fusion gene of Escherichia coli cytosine deaminase (CD) and herpes simplex virus type 1 thymidine kinase (TK) sequences activate and are subsequently killed by the nontoxic prodrugs 5-fluorocytosine and ganciclovir.
