Our previous studies have suggested a role for renomedullary interstitial cells (RMICs) and renal medullary hyaluronan (HA) in water homeostasis. In the present study, cultured rat RMICs were used to examine the relationship of osmolality and oxygen tension on the extracellular amount of HA in the culture and to the cellular immunoreactivity to CD44, a HA binding protein.
