Depression is one of the commonest psychiatric illness in the elderly. Screening instruments of depression can greatly facilitate its identification in the community, leading to early recognition and diagnosis. The Geriatric Depression Scale was translated into Chinese and its reliability, validity and factor structure examined in a population of Chinese elderly in Hong Kong.
