OBJECTIVE This study examined the association between family history of completed suicide and suicidal behavior and other clinical variables in subjects with bipolar disorder. METHOD 374 outpatients aged from 19 to 88 years (mean +/- SD age = 41.9 +/- 4.1 years) (54.3% female) meeting DSM-IV criteria for bipolar disorder type I or II or schizoaffective disorder, bipolar subtype, were included in the study. Forty-eight subjects with a family history of completed suicide were compared to 326…
History of suicide attempts in patients with bipolar disorder type I: socio-demographic and clinical factors, quality of life and functioning
TLDR
Suicidal behavior in patients with BD is a complex phenomenon and reflects a more severe course of illness, and patients with history of SA may have worse QoL and functional impairment not because of its direct effect, but because of the greater association with clinical factors related to poor prognosis.
Suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in bipolar disorder type I: an update for the clinician.
TLDR
Bipolar disorder is the psychiatric condition associated with highest lifetime risk for suicide attempts and suicide completion, so it is important to clinicians to understand the major risk factors for suicidal behavior in order to choose better strategies to deal with this complex behavior.
The Association of Lifetime Suicide Attempts With Anxiety Disorders in Patients With Bipolar Disorder
TLDR
The presence of lifetime social AD was associated with lifetime SAs independent of previous depressive episodes, suggesting that social AD itself is associated with a greater risk for SAs in patients with BD independent of the presence of depression.
Family History of Suicide and Personality
TLDR
A family history of suicide may be a useful clinical indicator that a prisoner is at increased risk for suicidal behaviour and may have problems with impulsive-aggression.
Suicide risk in rapid cycling bipolar patients.
Suicide, hospital-presenting suicide attempts, and criminality in bipolar disorder: examination of risk for multiple adverse outcomes.
TLDR
The combined risk of suicidality or criminality is substantially elevated in both relative and absolute terms in a national cohort of people diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and clinical prediction rules focusing on multiple vulnerabilities following onset of bipolar disorder may improve risk management.
Suicidal Behaviour in Mood Disorders—Who, When, and Why?
  • E. Isometsä
  • Psychology, Medicine
Canadian journal of psychiatry. Revue canadienne de psychiatrie
  • 2014
TLDR
Among subjects with mood disorders, suicidal acts usually occur during MDEs or mixed episodes concurrent with comorbid disorders, and illness factors can only in part explain suicidal behaviour.
Assessment and treatment of suicide risk in bipolar disorders
TLDR
An extensive understanding of the psychosocial circumstances and the psychopathology of bipolar patients (including temperament) may help clinicians describe the clinical picture accurately and prevent suicidal behavior in these patients.
A review of factors associated with greater likelihood of suicide attempts and suicide deaths in bipolar disorder: Part II of a report of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders Task Force on Suicide in Bipolar Disorder
TLDR
There is a wealth of data on factors that influence the likelihood of suicide attempts and suicide deaths in people with bipolar disorder, and further research is needed to replicate and determine the magnitude of effect of most of these factors.
