The perinuclear localization of Saccharomyces cerevisiae telomeres provides a useful model for studying mechanisms that control chromosome positioning. Telomeres tend to be localized at the nuclear periphery during early interphase, but following S phase they delocalize and remain randomly positioned within the nucleus.
