In 1962, Baierlein, Sharp, and Wheeler produced a reparametrisation invariant Lagrangian for general relativity. The BSW action was defined on superspace and looked very like the reparametrisation invariant Jacobi action of classical mechanics in that it was a product of a square root of a potential energy term multiplied by a square root of a kinetic term.
