Three-body interactions are expected to be common in globular clusters and in galactic cores hosting supermassive black holes. We consider an equal-mass binary black hole system in the presence of a third black hole. Using numerically generated binary black hole initial data sets, and first and second-order post-Newtonian (1PN and 2PN) techniques, we find that the presence of the third black hole has non-negligible relativistic effects on the location of the binary’s innermost stable circular…

Close encounters of three black holes

We present the first fully relativistic long-term numerical evolutions of three equal-mass black holes in a system consisting of a third black hole in a close orbit about a black-hole binary. These

Foundations of multiple black hole evolutions

We present techniques for long-term, stable, and accurate evolutions of multiple-black-hole spacetimes using the 'moving puncture' approach with fourth- and eighth-order finite-difference stencils.

From binary black hole simulation to triple black hole simulation

Black hole systems are among the most promising sources for a gravitational wave detection project. Now, China is planning to construct a space-based laser interferometric detector as a follow-on

Study of multi black hole and ring singularity apparent horizons

We study critical black-hole separations for the formation of a common apparent horizon in systems of $N$ black holes in a time-symmetric configuration. We study in detail the aligned equal mass

Apparent Horizons of N Black Holes and Black Hole Rings

We first study systems ofN Schwarzschild black holes in a time-symmetric spacelike hypersurface with axial symmetry. Apparent horizons are found by numerically solving a non linear system of 3

Black-hole lattices as cosmological models

The search for solutions of Einstein’s equations representing relativistic cosmological models with a discrete matter content has been remarkably fruitful in the last decade. In this review we

Innermost stable circular orbits in the Majumdar-Papapetrou dihole spacetime

We investigate the positions of stable circular massive particle orbits in the Majumdar--Papapetrou dihole spacetime with equal mass. In terms of qualitative differences of their sequences, we

Three-body equations of motion in successive post-Newtonian approximations

There are periodic solutions to the equal-mass three-body (and N-body) problem in Newtonian gravity. The figure-eight solution is one of them. In this paper, we discuss its solution in the first and

Choreographic solution to the general-relativistic three-body problem.

TLDR
Reexamine the three-body problem in the framework of general relativity and examines general-relativistic corrections to initial conditions so that an orbit for a three- body system can be choreographic and a figure eight.

Numerical evolution of multiple black holes with accurate initial data

TLDR
Numerical evolutions of three equal-mass black holes using the moving puncture approach and the results for three black hole evolutions with sixth-order waveform convergence are presented.

Innermost circular orbit of binary black holes at the third post-Newtonian approximation

The equations of motion of two point masses have recently been derived at the third post-Newtonian (3PN) approximation of general relativity. From that work we determine the location of the innermost

Modeling gravitational radiation from coalescing binary black holes

With the goal of bringing theory, particularly numerical relativity, to bear on an astrophysical problem of critical interest to gravitational wave observers we introduce a model for coalescence

Triple black hole systems formed in mergers of galaxies

We study the evolution of orbits of supermassive black holes in the nuclei of galaxies under the gravitational influence of the stars in the galaxy, as well as the cooling flow of gas into the black

Anisotropic gravitational radiation in the problems of three and four black holes

The momentum flux in merging binary black holes is rediscussed using the actual orbit integrations. The terminal velocity acquired by the centre of mass of the system is found to be greater than the

TLDR
The construction of initial-data sets representing binary black-hole configurations in quasi-circular orbits is studied in the context of the conformal-imaging formalism and some aspects of the numerical evolution of such data sets are explored.

Innermost stable circular orbit of binary black holes

We introduce a new method to construct solutions to the constraint equations of general relativity describing binary black holes in quasicircular orbit. Black hole pairs with arbitrary momenta can be

Plunge waveforms from inspiralling binary black holes.

TLDR
This work uses a technique that combines the full numerical approach to solve the Einstein equations, applied in the truly nonlinear regime, and linearized perturbation theory around the final distorted single black hole at later times to compute the plunge waveforms.

Binary black hole spacetimes are one of the great challenges for numerical general relativity, even if no matter sources are present. Here we consider the problem of finding initial data for several
