We compare deep Very Large Array (VLA) imaging of the total intensity and linear polarization of the inner jets in the nearby, low-luminosity radio galaxy 3C 31 with models of the jets as intrinsically symmetrical, decelerating relativistic flows. We show that the principal differences in appearance of the main and counter-jets within 30 arcsec of the nucleus can result entirely from the effects of relativistic aberration in two symmetrical, antiparallel, axisymmetric, time-stationary…
A relativistic model of the radio jets in NGC 315
We apply our intrinsically symmetrical, decelerating relativistic jet model to deep VLA imaging of the inner ±70arcsec of the giant low-luminosity radio galaxy NGC315. An optimized model accurately
A relativistic model of the radio jets in 3C296
We present new, deep 8.5-GHz VLA observations of the nearby, low-luminosity radio galaxy 3C 296 at resolutions from 0.25 to 5.5 arcsec. These show the intensity and polarization structures of the
Adiabatic relativistic models for the jets in the radio galaxy 3C 31
We present a general approach to the modelling of the brightness and polarization structures of adiabatic, decelerating relativistic jets, based on the formalism of Matthews and Scheuer. We compare
Systematic properties of decelerating relativistic jets in low-luminosity radio galaxies
We model the kiloparsec-scale synchrotron emission from jets in 10 Fanaroff-Riley Class I radio galaxies for which we have sensitive, high-resolution imaging and polarimetry from the Very Large
Jet-torus connection in radio galaxies: Relativistic hydrodynamics and synthetic emission
High-resolution Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry observations of active galactic nuclei have revealed asymmetric structures in the jets of radio galaxies. These asymmetric structures may be due to
New constraints on the structure and dynamics of black hole jets
Accreting black holes produce powerful relativistic plasma jets which emit radiation across all observable wavelengths but the details of the initial acceleration and confinement of the jet are
Multifrequency observations of the jets in the radio galaxy NGC 315
We present images of the jets in the nearby radio galaxy NGC 315 made with the Very Large Array at five frequencies between 1.365 and 5 GHz with resolutions between 1.5 and 45 arcsec. Within 15
Synchrotron and inverse-Compton emission from blazar jets - II. An accelerating jet model with a geometry set by observations of M87
In this paper we develop the jet model of Potter & Cotter (2012) to include a magnetically dominated accelerating parabolic base transitioning to a slowly decelerating conical jet with a geometry set
It is now possible to compare global three-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) jet formation simulations directly to multi-wavelength polarized VLBI observations of the
The detections of X-Relativistic bulk motion in hotspots of extra galactic radio quasars
Many fundamental physical properties of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) jets remain uncertain, such as the nature of the energy-carrying particles, whether the particle energy densities are in

Internal Structure of the Jets in 3C 353
We have imaged the total and polarized intensity structures of the jets in the FR II radio galaxy 3C 353 with transverse resolutions up to nine beamwidths using the VLA at 8.4 GHz. Both the polarized
The radio jets in B2 0755+379
We present and discuss observations of the radio galaxy 0755+379 made with the VLA at 1.4 and 5.0 GHz and with MERLIN at 1.7 GHz. These data allow us to image the radio jets over two orders of
Asymmetries in the jets of weak radio galaxies
We describe a study of the side-to-side asymmetries on kpc scales in the jets of FR I radio galaxies selected from the B2 sample. The basic data are jet surface brightnesses and widths determined by
HST and Merlin Observations of 3C 264—A Laboratory for Jet Physics and Unified Schemes
We present new HST optical continuum and emission line WFPC2 images and MERLIN radio observations of 3C 264 at ~01 resolution. The jet is well resolved in both the optical and radio images. In
Theory of extragalactic radio sources
Powerful extragalactic radio sources comprise two extended regions containing magnetic field and synchrotron-emitting relativistic electrons, each linked by a jet to a central compact radio source
Chandra Observations of the X-Ray Jet in Centaurus A
We present high angular resolution X-ray images and spectra from two Chandra AXAF CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS-I) observations of the X-ray jet in the nearby radio galaxy Cen A. We find that the
Face-on dust disks in galaxies with optical jets
The presence of optical synchrotron jets in radio galaxies is relatively rare. Here we show that of the nearest five FR I 3CR radio galaxies showing optical jets, four show evidence for almost
VLBI Observations of a Complete Sample of Radio Galaxies. II. The Parsec-Scale Structure of NGC 315
We present multifrequency radio observations of the low-luminosity (Fanaroff-Riley type 1) radio galaxy NGC 315 at parsec resolution. The observations were obtained at 1.6, 5, and 8.4 GHz with the
Structure of the magnetic field in the radio jets in 3C 31 and NGC 315.
We have used the VLA to map the distributions of the total and linearly polarized radio brightness over the inner parts of the jets in the radio galaxies 3C 31 and NGC 315. In each galaxy we find
Magnetic fields in extragalactic radio sources.
Distributions of total intensity and linear polarization have been calculated for synchrotron radiation from a variety of magnetic fields which may occur in extragalactic radio sources, assuming that
