The relationships of moisture stresses and consequent effective stress components in unsaturated soils are examined on the basis of a capillary model. The validity of such a model for this purpose is demonstrated. Effective stresses due to suctions in the pore water are shown to be dependent jointly on the pressure deficiency in the pore water and the degree of pore space saturation.
