}OBJECTIVE
The aim of this study was to describe relationships between oral status, dysphagia and malnutrition in a hospitalised older people.
BACKGROUND
Undernutrition in older people is a major concern in geriatric hospital wards. Different factors can modify nutritional status like dysphagia or oral status.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
About 159 consecutive inpatients (108 women, 51 men) were examined. Comprehensive gerontological data at baseline and nutritional status according to BMI, MNA and…

Poor oral health was associated with anorexia in older inpatients and detection of poor oral health status using a comprehensive oral health assessment may be useful for anorexic patients.

It is demonstrated that a very strong association exists between dysphagia and malnutrition as well as high levels of care dependency and dependency in activities of daily living.
Association between Improvement of Oral Health, Swallowing Function, and Nutritional Intake Method in Acute Stroke Patients
- MedicineInternational journal of environmental research and public health
- 2021
Recovery of swallowing function and oral health might be important for stroke patients to recover oral ingestion in acute care and the association between improved oral health, swallowing function, and nutritional intake methods in acute Care is investigated.
Older people with swallowing dysfunction and poor oral health are at greater risk of early death

Swallowing dysfunction and poor oral health were identified as independent risk factors for mortality in older people in intermediate care in Sweden and suggest that systematic assessment of swallowing function and oral health status should be performed for care considerations.

- 2022
The aim of the present comprehensive review is to describe the correlation among sarcopenic dysphagia, malnutrition, and oral frailty, characterizing their phenotypically overlapping features, to propose a comprehensive and effective management of elderly frail subjects.
Predictive factors associated with oral intake ability in gastrostomy patients under long-term care
- MedicineThe journal of nutrition, health & aging
- 2016
Results from this study suggested that sputum production, articulation and phonation, and voluntary saliva swallowing could be used as indicators for estimating oral intake status and swallowing function in gastrostomy patients under long-term care.

This study suggests that, amongst oral health status, tongue strength and motor function, as well as OHAT score, may have strong associations with oral feeding status in subacute stroke patients at convalescent rehabilitation units regardless of ADL levels.
Dysphagia risk, low muscle strength and poor cognition predict malnutrition risk in older adults athospital admission

Among older adults recently admitted to the hospital, almost three-quarters were malnourished or at malnutrition risk, illustrating the need for routine nutrition screening both at hospital admission and in community-dwelling older adults.
