Using the method of molecular-genetic analysis, we investigated the genus Neozoarces (subfamily Neozoarcinae) to reveal its relationships and position in the system of the suborder Zoacoidei. Comparison with representatives of other families of this suborder demonstrated that the lowest level of differences is observed between Neozoarces and subfamilies of the family Zoarcidae (the mean value of genetic divergence is 11.9%) with which it forms a general cluster on the phylogenetic tree. Molecular phylogeny and new classification of the genera Eulophias and Zoarchias (PISCES, Zoarcoidei).
The phylogenetic analysis supported the monophyly of the suborder level of the Zoarcoidei, but rejected the previous morphology- and osteology-based classification hypotheses regarding the two genera Eulophias and Zoarchias. Expand
Position of the genus Azygopterus (Stichaeidae, Perciformes) in the system of the suborder Zoarcoidei as inferred from sequence variation of mitochondrial and nuclear genes
Analysis of sequence variation in the mitochondrial and nuclear genes in Azygopterus corallinus showed that this species was genetically close to the group uniting the representatives of the familiesExpand
Relationships and position of wrymouths of the family cryptacanthodidae in the system of the suborder Zoarcoidei (Pisces, Perciformes)
The opinion of Makushok on a phylogenetically distinct position of wrymouths in relation to snake blennies and related families is not supported and the anatomical features of skull structure support the data of molecular genetics. Expand
Genetic differentiation of species and taxonomic structure of the superfamily Stichaeoidea (Perciformes: Zoarcoidei)
These investigations suggest that the superfamily Stichaeoidea should include not only the families Sticaeidae, Pholidae, and Ptilichthyidae, but also the Zaproridae and Cryptacanthodidae, while the family Anarhichadidae should be excluded from it. Expand
Molecular phylogenetic reconstruction and taxonomic investigation of eelpouts (Cottoidei: Zoarcales) based on Co-1 and Cyt-b mitochondrial genes
The monophyletic origin of the families Zoarcidae and Anarhichadidae, as well as Neozoarcidae, previously related to Stichaeidae and recently revised Eulophiidae are demonstrated and Opisthocentrinae and Pholidae seem to constitute a valid family-level taxon. Expand
Position of Krusensterniella genus (Gymnelinae, Zoarcidae) in the system of Zoarcidae fish family according to molecular genetic data
Using the analysis of variability of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA genes, it was established that the Krusensterniella genus is included in the Gymnelinae subfamily and, along with the GymnelopsisExpand
New osteological description of the genera Eulophias and Zoarchias (Perciformes, Zoarcoidei)
Osteological descriptions of Eulophias and Zoarchias are presented in detail for the first time and partially support those of a previous molecular analysis, but further systematic studies of Zoarcoidei are required. Expand
Genus Leptostichaeus and its position in the taxonomy of fishes (Perciformes: Zoarcoidei, Stichaeidae)
The genus Leptostichaeus is transferred into the group Azygopterinae, which is revalidated as a subfamily within the family Stichaeidae. Expand
Osteology of the prickleback genus Xiphister (Cottiformes: Zoarcoidei: Stichaeidae)
The skeletal anatomy of the genus Xiphister is described and illustrated, clarifying aspects of the skull roof and neurocranium, jaws, suspensorium, opercular series, vertebral column, dorsal and anal fins, trunk lateral-line canals and pectoral girdle and the elements of the hyoid and gill arches and scales are described. Family-group names of Recent fishes.
This publication has compiled a list of family-group names for Recent fishes, applied the rules of the Code and, if possible, tried to conserve the names in prevailing recent practice. Expand

Major patterns of higher teleostean phylogenies: a new perspective based on 100 complete mitochondrial DNA sequences.
Many unexpected, but highly supported relationships were found within the Percomorpha, being highly promising for the next investigative step towards resolution of this remarkably diversified group of teleosts. Expand
Tape blenny Neozoarces pulcher Steindachner, 1880 (Perciformes: Zoarcidae)—a sole valid species of the genus, its reproduction, and embryonal and larval development
On the basis of morphometric analysis of our collections of pairs of spawning fish of the genus Neozoarces, development of prolarvae of fish, and a survey of museum collections, a conclusion is madeExpand
Descriptions of Two New Pricklebacks (Perciformes: Stichaeidae) from Japan
Two new Japanese stichaeid fishes, Zoarchias hosoyai and Z. macrocephalus, are de- scribed on the basis of 5 specimens from Hakui, Ishikawa (coast of Japan Sea), and 37 specimens from Ago Bay, Shima, Mie (Pacific coast), re- spectively. Expand
