Regulatory toxicology of alternative fumigants

  title={Regulatory toxicology of alternative fumigants},
  author={V. S. Hantos'' and Y. L. Ren and J. M. Desmarchehe},
Carbonyl sulfide (COS), ethyl formate (HCCh~Hs, EF) and carbon disulfide (C~) are potential alternative fumigants for the protection of stored grams. At present EF 1S used as a fumigant of dried fruit, and C~ as a gram fumigant in Chma and m a region of Australia. Two toxicological issues that are relevant to the registration of these fumigants are the safety to workers potentially exposed to the fumigants, and the presence of residues m the commodity. There have been few studies of potential…

Study of Different Resistance Mechanisms in Stored-Product Insects: A Review
The different resistance mechanisms stored grain pests usually developed to cope with pesticidal stress, include physiological mechanism, behavioral mechanism and biochemical mechanism, have been described.

Acute and subchronic toxicity studies of rats exposed to vapors of methyl mercaptan and other reduced-sulfur compounds.
The effects of body and tissue weights, gross metabolic performance, O2 consumption, systolic blood pressure, various blood parameters, and intestinal transit time associated with 3-mo exposures of young adult male rats to chemically verified concentrations of methyl mercaptan vapor are summarized in this report.
Identification and determination of 2-thiothiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid in urine of workers exposed to carbon disulfide
It is suggested that the assay of urinary TTCA is suitable for detection of occupational exposure to CS2 and high concentrations of TTCA were shown to be present in urine of spinners exposed toCS2 concentrations of approximately 100 mg/m3.

    Annual review of pharmacology and toxicology
  • 1985
This review focuses on industrial chemicals that research has indicated may adversely affect human male reproductive capacity and suggests a need for further research in the following areas: reactive and capable of covalent interactions in biological systems.
Zur Toxicität des Kohlenoxysulfids
SummaryThere have been no reports in the literature to date describing human poisonings with carbon oxysulphide. The available data from the literature concerning animal experiments with this
Rapid determination of fumigant and industrial chemical residues in food.

A gas chromatographic (GC) method is described for the determination of 22 fumigant and industrial chemical residues in a variety of foods and has the main advantage of the method is rapid semiquantitative determination of multiple fumIGants from all food types.
Activity of pyruvate kinase and lactic acid dehydrogenase in mouse lung after transplacental exposure to carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic chemicals.
Under the same conditions, the non-carcinogenic phenylurethane (PHUR), ethylformate (EF), chrysene (CHRY), perylene (PER) and pyrene (PYR), as well as the toxic Paraquat (PAR), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and cadmium chloride (CdCl2), did not influence the activities of the enzymes tested.
Neurobehavioral toxicity of carbon disulfide.

The toxic sequelae of exposure have not been adequately described using modern techniques of neurobehavioral toxicology, nor have the mechanisms of action been adequately elucidated.
Epidemiological study of the effects of carbon disulfide on male sexuality and reproduction.
A significant effect of carbon disulfide exposure on libido and potency is indicated, but no effects were noted on fertility nor on semen quality.
Hepatic carbonyl sulfide metabolism.
Carbonyl sulfide is rapidly metabolized by isolated rat hepatocytes, as determined by COS disappearance, and additional experiments with a partially purified enzyme indicate that COS is a substrate for hepatic carbonic anhydrase.
Rapid Guide to Hazardous Air Pollutants
Concise and easy to use, this book brings together a wealth of hard-to-gather information in one compact pocket guide. It offers--in alphabetical order--detailed profiles of the 189 elements and
