Activation of pregnane X receptor (PXR) and constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) by xenobiotic inducers of cytochromes P450 is part of a pleiotropic response that includes liver hypertrophy, tumor promotion, effects on lipid homeostasis, and energy metabolism.
