Basement membranes (BMs) have been implicated in cell fate determination during development. Embryoid bodies (EBs) derived from mouse embryonic stem cells deficient in the laminin gamma1 chain are incapable of depositing a BM, resulting in failure of primitive ectoderm epithelialization.
