In mammals, the ovaries have the highest levels of stanniocalcin (STC) gene expression, most or all of which is confined to androgen-producing thecal-interstitial cells (TICs). Ovarian TICs also synthesize a different STC that consists of three high molecular weight species collectively known as big STC. Upon release in response to LH stimulation, TIC-derived big STC is sequestered locally by target cells, particularly steroidogenic cells of the corpus luteum, via a receptor-mediated process…

Characterization of big stanniocalcin variants in mammalian adipocytes and adrenocortical cells.
TLDR
The hypothesis that big STC is not unique to ovarian steroidogenic cells but is in fact common to cells with a role in lipid storage and release is supported.
Evidence for cross-talk between stanniocalcins.
TLDR
How the 2 hormones can compete for tissue receptors normally targeted by 1 form of the hormone (big STC) is demonstrated by demonstrating how STC50 can completely block the inhibitory effects of big STC on luteal cell progesterone release when added simultaneously.
Evolution and roles of stanniocalcin
Stanniocalcin, a Potential Ovarian Angiogenesis Regulator, Does Not Affect Endothelial Cell Apoptosis
TLDR
Data indicate that STC is not angiosuppressive for endothelial cells, although it could potentially modulate local angiogenesis acting at the granulosa cell level, and this research focused on the potential involvement of stanniocalcin (STC), a protein whose biological function is still unclear, in the control mechanisms of follicularAngiogenesis.
The stanniocalcin family of proteins.
TLDR
It is apparent that STC has an ancient lineage and that the STC family of proteins is proving to have significant roles in metabolism, reproduction and development.
Stanniocalcin-1 in the female reproductive system and pregnancy
TLDR
The literature presented summarise the wide expression profile of STC-1 within female reproductive organs, as well as highlighting the putative roles of STc-1 in various functions in the reproductive system, including those in pregnancy whose aetiology occurs in the first trimester.
RAPID COMMUNICATION / COMMUNICATION RAPIDE Evidence for cross-talk between stanniocalcins
TLDR
How the 2 hormones can compete for tissue receptors normally targeted by 1 form of the hormone (big STC) is demonstrated by demonstrating how STC50 can completely block the inhibitory effects of big STC on luteal cell progesterone release when added simultaneously.
Mammalian stanniocalcin-1 activates mitochondrial antioxidant pathways: new paradigms for regulation of macrophages and endothelium.

TLDR
The data suggest that STC1 activates antioxidant pathways in endothelial cells and macrophages and displays cytoprotective and anti-inflammatory actions.
Low-resolution structural studies of human Stanniocalcin-1
TLDR
The dimerization was confirmed by mass spectrometry as was the highly conserved disulfide pattern, which is identical to that found in fish STC1, which reveals the first low resolution, structural information for human STC 1.

Ovarian stanniocalcin is structurally unique in mammals and its production and release are regulated through the luteinizing hormone receptor.
TLDR
It is found that forskolin significantly increased STC gene expression and secretion by both rat and bovine TICs, an effect that was only replicated by human (h) chorionic gonadotropin (CG).
Targeting of Big Stanniocalcin and Its Receptor to Lipid Storage Droplets of Ovarian Steroidogenic Cells*
TLDR
Findings indicate that theca cell-derived big STC is targeted to the cholesterol/lipid storage droplets of luteal cells to regulate steroidogenesis.
Dynamic regulation of mouse ovarian stanniocalcin expression during gestation and lactation.
TLDR
The data provide evidence for the active regulation of STC expression in the ovary during gestation and lactation and therefore implies that STC is a new regulator of the gestational and nursing state.
Estradiol-17β Is Produced in Bovine Corpus Luteum1
TLDR
The overall results indicate that estradiol is produced locally in bovine CL throughout the estrous cycle, and they suggest thatEstradiol plays a role in regulating PGF2α production in CL as an autocrine/paracrine factor.
Characterization of Mammalian Stanniocalcin Receptors
TLDR
The evidence implies a role for STC in cell metabolism, and the existence of mitochondrial receptors prompted a similar search for the ligand and receptor to mitochondria.

TLDR
The dramatic reprogramming of gene expression in granulosa cells leading to that of luteal cells is complete within 5 to 7 hours and is irreversible.
Mechanisms controlling the function and life span of the corpus luteum.
TLDR
The primary function of the corpus luteum is secretion of the hormone progesterone, which is required for maintenance of normal pregnancy in mammals, although growth hormone, prolactin, and estradiol also play a role in several species.
Mammalian stanniocalcins and cancer.
TLDR
There is a positive correlation between the level of expression of estrogen receptor and expression of both STC1 and STC2 in breast cancer, and the roles they may play in normal physiology and in breast and other cancers are discussed.
Molecular regulation of luteal progesterone synthesis in domestic ruminants.
TLDR
Although synthesis of progesterone is a complex process, both positive and negative regulation of the process appears to occur primarily at a single step (transport of cholesterol through the mitochondrial membranes to the inner mitochondrial membrane) in the pathway.
The co-localization of stanniocalcin protein, mRNA and kidney cell markers in the rat kidney.
TLDR
Correlative immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization revealed that the STC gene was expressed only in cortical and medullary collecting duct cells, which suggests either that STC is being sequestered by segments that do not express the gene (making them putative targets of the hormone), or thatSTC mRNA levels were simply too low in these other segments to be detected by in situ Hybridization.
