The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are ligand-activated transcription factors belonging to the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily. PPARalpha, the first identified PPAR family member, is principally expressed in tissues exhibiting high rates of beta-oxidation such as liver, kidney, heart and muscle.
