Integrin heterodimers which share a common beta 1 subunit are the major cellular receptors for many extracellular matrix proteins. Here, we show that two inflammatory mediators, interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), can regulate the expression of the alpha 1 beta 1 integrin heterodimer, known to be a laminin and collagen receptor.
