Abstract 1. 1. During dehydration protea beetles lose weight rapidly, but their haemolymph osmolarity and sodium and potassium concentrations are well regulated. 2. 2. Drinking restores the haemolymph volume and osmolarity to the original levels, but not the cation concentrations. 3. 3. Osmoregulation in the protea beetle is compared with that in other insects. 4. 4. The diet and behaviour of the beetle are important factors in its water balance.
