Adiponectin is an adipose tissue-specific protein that is abundantly present in the circulation and suggested to be involved in insulin sensitivity and development of atherosclerosis. Because cytokines are suggested to regulate adiponectin, the aim of the present study was to investigate the interaction between adiponectin and three adipose tissue-derived cytokines (IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-alpha). The study was divided into three substudies as follows: 1) plasma adiponectin and mRNA levels in…

Figures and Tables from this paper

Regulation of adiponectin production by insulin: interactions with tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6.
TLDR
In conclusion, these studies show that insulin upregulates adiponectin expression and release, and that TNF-α opposes the stimulatory effects of insulin.
Regulation of adiponectin secretion in human subcutaneous and omental adipose tissue: effects of pioglitazone and endothelin-1: a pilot study.
TLDR
Data suggest that, SAT, appears to be major contributor to regulation of adiponectin in circulation, and mechanism underlying these regulatory agents mediated stimulation or inhibition of adip onectin secretion in human adipose tissue needs to be focused on.
Regulation of adiponectin expression in human adipocytes: effects of adiposity, glucocorticoids, and tumor necrosis factor alpha.
TLDR
The data suggest that reduced adiponectin synthesis in subcutaneous adipocytes contributes to lower serum adip onectin levels in obesity and that glucocorticoids regulate adiponECTin gene expression in human adipocytes.
The regulation of adipokines related to obesity and diabetes is sensitive to BDNF levels and adipose tissue location
TLDR
BDNF levels and diet differentially affect the expression of adipokines in different fat tissues in the body and may play a protective role in obesity and diabetes.
Adiponectin: a biomarker of obesity-induced insulin resistance in adipose tissue and beyond.
TLDR
It is proposed that deciphering the molecular details governing the adiponectin gene expression and protein secretion will lead to more comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of insulin resistance in the adipose tissue and provide us new avenues for the therapeutic intervention of obesity and insulin resistance-related human disorders.
Addition of Exercise Increases Plasma Adiponectin and Release from Adipose Tissue.
TLDR
Despite similar reductions in body weight and fat mass, the addition of aerobic exercise to caloric restriction increased plasma adiponectin concentrations, which may be partly explained by increased adip onectin release from abdominal and gluteal subcutaneous adipose tissue.
Adipose tissue and adipokines: for better or worse.
Adiponectin and other adipocytokines as predictors of markers of triglyceride-rich lipoprotein metabolism.
TLDR
The data suggest that the plasma adiponectin concentration may not only link abdominal fat, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia, but may also exert an independent role in regulating TRL metabolism in men.
Increased plasma levels of adipokines in preeclampsia: relationship to placenta and adipose tissue gene expression.
TLDR
Monitoring of maternal plasma concentration of adiponectin, resistin, and leptin and their mRNA expression in abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue and placenta from preeclamptic and healthy pregnant women undergoing caesarean section found similar mean mRNA levels of adipo-resistin, Resistin mRNA levels in Placenta were not significantly different between PE and HP, whereas leptin mRNA levels were higher in PE placentA compared with HP.
Dietary Fatty Acids Differentially Regulate Secretion of Adiponectin and Interleukin-6 in Primary Canine Adipose Tissue Culture.
TLDR
Findings are consistent with findings of increased circulating concentrations of adiponectin and decreased circulating concentration of IL6 in dogs supplemented with dietary fish oil, and show that the effect of fish oil on circulating concentrations in dogs is, at least partially, the result of local effects of EPA and PAM on adipose tissue.

Elevated levels of interleukin 6 are reduced in serum and subcutaneous adipose tissue of obese women after weight loss.
TLDR
Results suggest that, as for leptin, circulating IL-6 concentrations reflect, at least in part, adipose tissue production reduced after weight loss, and could play a role in the improved sensitivity to insulin observed in these patients.
Regulation of interleukin 8 production and gene expression in human adipose tissue in vitro.
TLDR
It is demonstrated for the first time that interleukin 8 is produced and released from human adipose tissue and from isolated adipocytes in vitro, which may indicate that IL-8 from adipOSE tissue could be involved in some of the obesity-related complications.
PPARgamma ligands increase expression and plasma concentrations of adiponectin, an adipose-derived protein.
TLDR
Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) might prevent atherosclerotic vascular disease in insulin-resistant patients by inducing the production of adiponectin through direct effect on its promoter and antagonizing the effect of TNF-alpha on the adiponECTin promoter.
Adipose tissue tumor necrosis factor and interleukin-6 expression in human obesity and insulin resistance.
TLDR
Plasma IL-6 was significantly higher in obese subjects and demonstrated a highly significant inverse relationship with S(I) (r = -0.71, P < 0.001), while plasma TNF was significantly associated with plasma nonesterified fatty acid levels (r=0.49, P = 0.002).
Paradoxical decrease of an adipose-specific protein, adiponectin, in obesity.
TLDR
Plasma concentrations of adiponectin in obese subjects were significantly lower than those in non-obese subjects, although adip onectin is secreted only from adipose tissue.
Weight reduction increases plasma levels of an adipose-derived anti-inflammatory protein, adiponectin.
TLDR
Body weight reduction increased the plasma levels of a protective adipocytokine, adiponectin, despite the reduction of the only tissue of its own synthesis, suggesting that the expression of adip onectin is under feedback inhibition in obesity.
Opposite Regulation of Interleukin‐8 and Tumor Necrosis Factor‐α by Weight Loss
TLDR
Weight loss in obese subjects was associated with opposite changes in the secretion and transcription of IL-8 and TNF-α in the adipose tissue, as well as in plasma, which could indicate that plasmaIL-8 under some conditions may be related to changes in adipose tissues IL- 8 production.
Adiponectin gene expression and secretion is inhibited by interleukin-6 in 3T3-L1 adipocytes.
Adiponectin, an Adipocyte-Derived Plasma Protein, Inhibits Endothelial NF-&kgr;B Signaling Through a cAMP-Dependent Pathway
TLDR
The possibility that adiponectin, which is naturally present in the blood stream, modulates the inflammatory response of endothelial cells through cross talk between cAMP-PKA and NF-&kgr;B signaling pathways is raised.
Hormonal regulation of adiponectin gene expression in 3T3-L1 adipocytes.
TLDR
The results suggest that adiponectin gene expression is reversibly downregulated by insulin, TNFalpha, and dexamethasone, and support the concept of adip onectin being an important selectively controlled modulator of insulin sensitivity.
