Abstract The Niger Delta at the southernmost part of Nigeria, is a large and ecologically sensitive region. Natural and anthropogenic activities, such as subsidence, sea-level rise, upstream dams and reservoirs, dredging and overabstraction of groundwater, disturb this equilibrium, leading to adjustments in ecological conditions and boundaries. Ecological changes affecting large areas cannot be explained by local observation. Relating observed effects to causes of environmental behaviour…
Hydrological-morphological and landscape features of the Niger River delta
The Niger River delta, one of the largest deltas of the world, is characterized in this article. The geographic features, including the delta hydrographic system, natural and territorial complexes,
Geospatial Evaluation of Niger Delta Coastal Susceptibility to Climate Change
Coastal topography is a result of complex interactions between anthropogenic activities and natural processes. The Niger Delta is not an exception. The region is currently under human unprecedented
Deltas at risk
The long-term sustainability of populated deltas is often more affected by large-scale engineering projects than sea-level rise associated with global warming and the global ocean volume increase. On
Groundwater conditions in the mangrove swamps of the western Niger Delta are described for the first time from the Ughoton area. The interconnected streams and creeks subdivide the 'swamps' into
Urban Land-Use Dynamics in the Niger Delta: The Case of Greater Port Harcourt Watershed
Cities in developing countries are urbanising at a rapid rate, resulting in substantial pressures on environmental systems. Among the main factors that lead to flooding, controlling land-use change

Estuaries provide numerous goods and services needed for human development and socioeconomic sustenance, housing about 60 % of the world’s population with highly fragile natural endowment of
Environmental impacts of oil production in the Niger Delta: remote sensing and social survey examination
This study examines environmental change in Tsekelewu, Niger Delta Region. Both remote sensing and social survey methods were used to assess the impacts of oil exploration activities around the

Dynamics and Quality of Water Resources In the Niger Delta
Groundwater over-abstraction in the urban coastal areas has resulted in increased aquifer salinity and inland incursion of tidal waters has been strengthened by the reduction of freshwater discharge due to impoundment in upstream dams and reservoirs.
Impact of dams on the hydrology of the Niger Delta
Abstract The Niger Delta has a fragile coastline in which the river hydraulic forces are in dynamic equilibrium with coastal processes. The impoundment of 49 dams in the Niger catchment area with a
Construction and Performance of River Bank Erosion Protection Structure in the Niger Delta
Various bank erosion control measures were examined for applicability in the Niger Delta. Anchored sand-filled polypropylene mattress revetment fulfilled the requirements of optimum performance and
