Regional expiratory flow limitation (EFL) may occur during tidal breathing without being detected by measurements of flow at the mouth. We tested this hypothesis by using Technegas to reveal sites of EFL. A first study (study 1) was undertaken to determine whether deposition of Technegas during tidal breathing reveals the occurrence of regional EFL in induced bronchoconstriction. Time-activity curves of Technegas inhaled during 12 tidal breaths were measured in four asthmatic subjects at…
Methods for Assessing Expiratory Flow Limitation during Tidal Breathing in COPD Patients
TLDR
Among the currently available techniques, the negative expiratory pressure (NEP) has been validated in a wide variety of settings and disorders and should be regarded as a simple, non invasive, most practical, and accurate new technique.

Exercise-induced flow limitation, dynamic hyperinflation and exercise capacity in patients with bronchial asthma
TLDR
Tidal expiratory flow limitation and dynamic hyperinflation during exercise are common in stable asthmatics with normal spirometric results and without exercise-induced asthma, and may contribute to reduction in exercise capacity.
Physiological techniques for detecting expiratory flow limitation during tidal breathing

Among the currently available techniques, the negative expiratory pressure has been validated in a wide variety of settings and disorders and should be regarded as a simple, noninvasive, practical and accurate new technique.
Tidal expiratory flow-limitation induces expiratory looping of the alveolar pressure-flow relation in COPD patients.
TLDR
The greater Aexp measured in FL relative to NFL COPD patients, its relative invariance after BD when flow-limitation persists, and its fall when flow -limitation is abolished indicate that tEFL is a major determinant of the magnitude of the expiratory loop.
Peripheral ventilation heterogeneity determines the extent of bronchoconstriction in asthma.
TLDR
Using ventilation SPECT/CT imaging in asthmatics, induced bronchoconstriction leads to the development of areas of low ventilation and the relative volume of the low-ventilation regions was predicted by ventilation heterogeneity in diffusion-dependent acinar airways.
Attenuation of induced bronchoconstriction in healthy subjects: effects of breathing depth.
TLDR
In healthy subjects exposed to MCh, a series of breaths of different depth up to TLC caused a progressive and sustained attenuation of bronchoconstriction, and the effects of the depth of the five-breath series were more evident on the RV than on V, likely due to the different mechanisms that regulate airway closure and expiratory flow limitation.
Methacholine-Induced Variations in Airway Volume and the Slope of the Alveolar Capnogram Are Distinctly Associated with Airflow Limitation and Airway Closure
TLDR
Alterations in the geometry and/or function of large and small airways were weakly correlated and contributed distinctly to airflow limitation and airway closure as assessed by FVC reduction.
Nasal nitric oxide and regulation of human pulmonary blood flow in the upright position.
TLDR
Evidence is provided that autoinhalation of endogenous NO from the nasal airways may ameliorate the influence of gravity on pulmonary blood flow distribution in the upright position and contribute to the adaptation to bipedalism.
Assessing Airflow Obstruction: When Everything Is Not So Obvious
TLDR
The study by Stănescu and Veriter does not bring further or solid evidence that a low FEV1 and VC with a normal FEV 1/VC ratio is definitely the result of airflow obstruction besides the fact that most of these subjects had a history of smoking and a lower CO diffusing capacity than an age-matched control group.

Expiratory airflow limitation and hyperinflation during methacholine-induced bronchoconstriction.
TLDR
The results suggest that hyperinflation during MCh-induced bronchoconstriction is triggered by dynamic compression of the airways and is associated with moderate increase of DIA during expiration.
A simple method to detect expiratory flow limitation during spontaneous breathing.
TLDR
The NEP technique is concluded to provide a simple, rapid, and reliable method for detection of expiratory flow limitation in spontaneously breathing subjects, which does not require the patient's co-operation, and can be applied in different body positions both at rest and during muscular exercise.
Dynamic hyperinflation and flow limitation during methacholine-induced bronchoconstriction in asthma.
TLDR
Dyspnoea appears to be related to the increase in end-expiratory lung volume and not to the onset of expiratory flow limitation in acute methacholine-induced bronchoconstriction, and it is concluded that dynamic hyperinflation may occur in the absence of expiral flow limitation and that expiratories flow limitation does not represent the triggering factor to generate dynamichyperinflation.
Assessing the reversibility of airway obstruction.
TLDR
Increases in maximal flow detected by PEFV and/or changes in IC may be substantially obscured by the effects of inspiration to total lung capacity required for the measurement of FEV1 in patients with chronic bronchoconstriction.
Lung mechanics during induced bronchoconstriction.
TLDR
Findings are consistent with the idea that asthmatic individuals have a stronger peripheral response to agonists than normal individuals, and suggest that tidal inspiration may have induced transient bronchodilation in more constricted subjects.
Airway closure measured by a technegas bolus and SPECT.
TLDR
This study indicates that simultaneous SPECT emission and transmission scans, using a Technegas bolus, are a valid method of measuring airwayclosure in vivo, with the added advantage of providing three-dimensional data that allow the detection of small, discrete areas of airway closure and determination of their volumes and shapes.

TLDR
It is concluded that stress relaxation was responsible for the decrease in lung recoil during dynamic hyperinflation with induced bronchoconstriction and after voluntary increases in mean lung volume.
