Abstract Chomsky and Halle in The sound pattern of English consider the enumeration of the distinctive features to be a condition on the form of grammars. One of the purposes of such a condition is to limit the set of all possible grammars. However, the notion of distinctive feature itself is still not narrowly enough defined in the sense that almost any imaginable vocal quality may qualify as a distinctive feature.
