Acquired chromosome abnormalities in tumours often reflect pathogenetic events at the gene level. Multicolour fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) with single-copy probes offers extensive possibilities to characterise chromosome breakpoints in relation to the physical map of the human genome.
