In arXiv:1705.10172 a string theory inspired alternative to gravitational collapse was proposed, consisting of a bubble of AdS space made up of ingredients from string theory. These ultra compact objects are 9/8 times the size of the corresponding Schwarzschild black hole, but being within the photosphere are almost indistinguishable from them. Slowly rotating counterparts of these black shells were constructed in arXiv:1712.00511, which closely mimic a Kerr black hole, but have a quadrupole…

Observational signatures from horizonless black shells imitating rotating black holes
A bstractIn arXiv:1705.10172 it was proposed that string theory replaces Schwarzschild black holes with horizonless thin shells with an AdS interior. In this paper we extend the analysis to slowly
Dynamics and observational signatures of shell-like black hole mimickers
We undertake the task of studying the non-linear dynamics of quantum gravity motivated alternatives to black holes that in the classical limit appear as ultra-compact shells of matter. We develop a
Black holes as bubbles of AdS
A bstractIn this paper we propose that bubbles of AdS within Minkowski spacetime, stabilized at a finite radius by stiff matter and an electromagnetic gas, can be an alternative endpoint of
The stretched horizon and black hole complementarity.
Three postulates asserting the validity of conventional quantum theory, semiclassical general relativity, and the statistical basis for thermodynamics are introduced as a foundation for the study of
The Black hole horizon as a quantum surface
In previous work it was argued why it is practically inevitable to assume the existence of an S-matrix that describes particle absorption and production by a black hole, and the relationship between
Most Supermassive Black Holes Must Be Rapidly Rotating
We use the integrated spectrum of the X-ray background and quasars' spectral energy distribution to derive the contribution of quasars to the energy output of the universe. We find a lower limit for
Testing the nature of dark compact objects: a status report
Very compact objects probe extreme gravitational fields and may be the key to understand outstanding puzzles in fundamental physics. These include the nature of dark matter, the fate of spacetime
Breakdown of Predictability in Gravitational Collapse
The principle of equivalence, which says that gravity couples to the energy-momentum tensor of matter, and the quantum-mechanical requirement that energy should be positive imply that gravity is
Black holes: complementarity or firewalls?
A bstractWe argue that the following three statements cannot all be true: (i) Hawking radiation is in a pure state, (ii) the information carried by the radiation is emitted from the region near the
Multipole Moments. II. Curved Space
Multipole moments are defined for static, asymptotically flat, source‐free solutions of Einstein's equations. The definition is completely coordinate independent. We take one of the 3‐surfaces V,
