Context. BL Lacertae objects have been the targets for numerous recen t multiwavelength campaigns, continuum spectral variabil ity studies, and theoretical spectral and variability modelin g. A meaningful interpretation of the results of such studie s requires a reliable knowledge of the objects’ redshifts; however, the redshift for many are still unknown or uncertain. Aims.
