Rediscovering CSCL

@inproceedings{Stahl2001RediscoveringC,
  title={Rediscovering CSCL},
  author={Gerry Stahl},
  year={2001}
}
In their penultimate sentence, Hakkarainen, Lipponen, and Järvelä correctly point out that CSCL researchers have a complex challenge because the educational use of new information/communication technologies is inextricably bound up with new pedagogical and cognitive practices of learning and instruction. The naïve, technology-driven view was that tools such as CSILE would make a significant difference on their own. The subsequent experience has been that the classroom culture bends such tools…
Dewey's contribution to the foundations of CSCL research
TLDR
A description of what I think research in CSCL is, or at least should be, about is proposed to distinguish what is done in this field from traditional research in education on learning outcomes, research based on classical information processing theory, and conventional research on social interaction.
Group cognition: the collaborative locus of agency in CSCL
TLDR
This paper argues that thinking in CSCL settings should be primarily analyzed at the small-group unit of analysis, where contributions coming from individual interpretive perspectives are interwoven into group cognition.
Computer-supported collaborative learning: An historical perspective
TLDR
It is important to view CSCL as a vision of what may be possible with computers and of what kinds of research should be conducted, rather than as an established body of broadly accepted laboratory and classroom practices.
Chapter 21 Computer-supported collaborative learning
TLDR
It is important to view CSCL as a vision of what may be possible with computers and of what kinds of research should be conducted, rather than as an established body of broadly accepted laboratory and classroom practices.
Promoting metacognitive skills through peer scaffolding in a CSCL environment
TLDR
The results of the current research suggest that the pedagogical use of the KnowCat system may favour and improve the development of the students’ metacognitive learning processes.
A Usability Study of an Educational Groupware System: Supporting Awareness for Collaboration
TLDR
The study suggests versatility is not of singular importance in an educational groupware tool, and how it can provide a seamless and focused distributed learning environment determines the overall pedagogical appropriateness of the software in CSCL.
Group cognition in computer-assisted collaborative learning
  • G. Stahl
  • Psychology
    J. Comput. Assist. Learn.
  • 2005
TLDR
A critical look is taken at the concept of shared meaning as it is generally used and an empirical study of how group cognition is constituted in practice is proposed.
Contributions to a theoretical framework for CSCL
TLDR
A theoretical framework incorporating models of knowledge building, perspectives and artifacts -- and grounded in empirical analysis of collaborative interaction -- can guide the design of computer-based artifacts and media as support for collaborative learning with appropriate, elaborated and unified conceptualizations.
Approaching institutional contexts: systemic versus dialogic research in CSCL
TLDR
It is concluded that not enough attention has been given to the emergent characteristics of activities where CSCL tools have been introduced and this is particularly the case in studies belonging to a systemic approach.
A critical analysis to explore the extent to which cases of asynchronous online discussions support collaborative learning
TLDR
The research findings reveal that the participants' interactional involvement with the collaborative situation appears to be highly influenced by the way the practice environment has been designed, especially in terms of task design and the nature of involvement of the tutor in the learning process.

TLDR
An analysis of the 1571 threads in 7 distance education conferences reveals patterns of development that can be used to statistically assign growth probabilities to individual threads.
Interaction Analysis: Foundations and Practice
TLDR
Video technology has been vital in establishing Interaction Analysis, which depends on the technology of audiovisual recording for its primary records and on playback capability for their analysis.
