Cellular recruitment and degeneration of branchial mitochondrion-rich (MR) cells were examined in Mozambique tilapia transferred from hypoosmotic to hyperosmotic water. To examine apoptosis in the gills associated with salinity change, tilapia were directly transferred from freshwater to 70% seawater.
