Cambium and xylem from the stem of an about 100-year-old linden ( Tibia cordata ) was examined. Intrusive growth of cells, leading to forking of cell ends and consequently to a change in the contacts of fusiform cells, occurs in the layer of initial cells. This growth gives two configurations, Z and S. Both appear along the same storey boundary, but they are spatially separated (groups of S and Z endings alternate).
