PURPOSE OF REVIEW Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is the leading cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis in the healthcare setting. An emerging consensus suggests that CDI is caused by pathogenic toxin production, gut microbial dysbiosis and altered host inflammatory responses.
