After a plateau from 2000 through 2005, the U.S. infant mortality rate declined by 12% to a rate of 6.05 in 2011. Provisional infant mortality counts for the first half of 2012 suggest a continued downward trend. Infant mortality declined from 2005 through 2011 for all major racial and ethnic groups, with the most rapid decline among non-Hispanic black women.
