  • The first part (JMEH 12 (2014) 1, 5-28) dealt with the internationalisation of First World War historiography and transnational history. It asked why the war is almost entirely unknown in the history and memory of some states, while it has powerful symbolic value in others. It provided an overview of the literature on the origins, combat on the Western Front, other fronts and non-combatants. It located the international historiography since 2001 within the long-term context.
