Modelling and application are seen as a highly important topic for maths lessons. But so far the concept “modelling competencies” has not been described in a comprehensive manner. The aim of this paper is to supplement former descriptions of modelling competencies based on empirical data. An empirical study was carried out which aimed at showing the effects of the integration of modelling tasks into day-today math classes. Central questions of this study were – among others: How far do math…

Understanding Students' Modelling Skills

A pilot research study devised to measure modelling skills at stages in a modelling course and the results provide insights enabling the better understanding of the complexities of learning to model and of teaching mathematical modelling.

The goals of this chapter are (1) to outline and substantiate a broad conceptualization of what it means to think mathematically, (2) to summarize the literature relevant to understanding

The Effect of Task Organisation on Classroom Modelling Activities

In a course on population modelling, students constructed meaning which ignored the references to an out-of-school reality and constructed a suitable ‘virtual reality’ - a theoretical universe where the students' knowledge of mathematical methods becomes the ultimate formatting force.
