The kinetics and mechanisms of graphene growth on Ni films at 720-880 °C have been measured using fast pulses of acetylene and real-time optical diagnostics. In situ UV-Raman spectroscopy was used to unambiguously detect isothermal graphene growth at high temperatures, measure the growth kinetics with ∼1 s temporal resolution, and estimate the fractional precipitation upon cooldown. Optical reflectivity and videography provided much faster temporal resolution. Both the growth kinetics and the…
Exploring growth kinetics of carbon nanotube arrays by in situ optical diagnostics and modeling
Simple kinetic models of carbon nanotube growth have been able to successfully link together many experimental parameters involved in the growth of carbon nanotubes for practical applications
Radiation-mode optical microscopy on the growth of graphene.
TLDR
Analysis of the growth feature reveals that the attachment and detachment of carbon precursors are the rate-determining factor in the CVD growth of graphene, and radiation-mode optical microscopy is expected to be applicable to the other crystal growth at high temperatures in various atmospheres.
Low temperature growth of fully covered single-layer graphene using a CoCu catalyst.
TLDR
X-ray photoemission spectroscopy shows that Co and Cu form an alloy at high temperatures, which has a drastically lower carbon solubility, as determined by using the calculated Co-Cu-C ternary phase diagram.
Parametric Investigation of the Isothermal Kinetics of Growth of Graphene on a Nickel Catalyst in the Process of Chemical Vapor Deposition of Hydrocarbons
A kinetic model of isothermal synthesis of multilayer graphene on the surface of a nickel foil in the process of chemical vapor deposition, on it, of hydrocarbons supplied in the pulsed regime is
Graphene Synthesis Using a CVD Reactor and a Discontinuous Feed of Gas Precursor at Atmospheric Pressure
The present work shows a new method in order to cost-effectively achieve the synthesis of graphene by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). Unlike most usual processes, where precursors such as argon, H2,
Simulation of the Dynamics of Isothermal Growth of Single-Layer Graphene on a Copper Catalyst in the Process of Chemical Vapor Deposition of Hydrocarbons
A new kinetic model of isothermal growth of single-layer graphene on a copper catalyst as a result of the chemical vapor deposition of hydrocarbons on it at a low pressure has been developed on the
Chemical Vapor Deposition Growth of Bernal-Stacked Bilayer Graphene by Edge-Selective Etching with H2O
Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene is uniquely suited for application in electronic and photonic devices because of its tunable band structure. Even though chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is considered
Nanoscale Silicon as a Catalyst for Graphene Growth: Mechanistic Insight from in Situ Raman Spectroscopy
Nanoscale carbons are typically synthesized by thermal decomposition of a hydrocarbon at the surface of a metal catalyst. Whereas the use of silicon as an alternative to metal catalysts could unlock

The dynamics of the nucleation, growth and termination of single-walled carbon nanotubes from in situ Raman spectroscopy during chemical vapor deposition
The dynamics of the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) is extracted experimentally using in situ Raman spectroscopy. Nanotubes are grown using a thin film
In situ measurements and modeling of carbon nanotube array growth kinetics during chemical vapor deposition
Direct measurements of carbon nanotube growth kinetics are described based upon time-resolved reflectivity (TRR) of a HeNe laser beam from vertically aligned nanotube arrays (VANTAs) as they grow
Incremental growth of short SWNT arrays by pulsed chemical vapor deposition.
TLDR
In-situ optical extinction measurements indicate that over 98% of the nanotubes reinitiate growth on successive gas pulses, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images show that the SWNTs do not exhibit segments, caps, or noticeable sidewall defects resulting from repeatedly stopping and restarting growth.
Ellipsometry as a Real-Time Optical Tool for Monitoring and Understanding Graphene Growth on Metals
Despite the recent advances in the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of graphene, it is still a great challenge to control the thickness of graphene especially in real-time during the growth. So far,
Flux-dependent growth kinetics and diameter selectivity in single-wall carbon nanotube arrays.
TLDR
Sufficiently high acetylene partial pressures in pulsed-CVD appear to temporarily terminate the growth of the fastest-growing, small-diameter nanotubes by overcoating the more catalytically active, smaller catalyst nanoparticles within the ensemble with non-nanotube carbon in agreement with a growth model.
Phases of Carbon Nanotube Growth and Population Evolution from in Situ Raman Spectroscopy during Chemical Vapor Deposition
The dynamical evolution of nanotube chemical vapor deposition growth was investigated by in situ spectroscopy of three main Raman bands: G, D, and RBM. The evolution in diameter distribution is
Self-deactivation of single-walled carbon nanotube growth studied by in situ Raman measurements.
TLDR
The results support that the healing of the edge defects controls both the crystalline order and the growth lifetime, and that the initial growth rate and the lifetime are inversely correlated with the growth parameters.
Evolution of graphene growth on Ni and Cu by carbon isotope labeling.
TLDR
This work used carbon isotope labeling in conjunction with Raman spectroscopic mapping to track carbon during the growth process and shows that at high temperatures sequentially introduced isotopic carbon diffuses into the Ni first, mixes, and then segregates and precipitates at the surface of Ni forming graphene and/or graphite.
