Breaking news and first-hand reports often trend on social media platforms before traditional news outlets cover them. The real-time analysis of posts on such platforms can reveal valuable and timely insights for journalists, politicians, business analysts, and first responders, but the high number and diversity of new posts pose a challenge. In this work, we present an interactive system that enables the visual analysis of streaming social media data on a large scale in real-time. We propose…

In Defence of Visual Analytics Systems: Replies to Critics

This work comes in defence of VA systems by contributing two interview studies for gathering critics and responses to those criticisms, and highlights that the presented knowledge is deep, extensive, but also imperfect, provocative, and controversial, and thus recommend reading with an inclusive and critical eye.

A Design Space for Surfacing Content Recommendations in Visual Analytic Platforms

The state-of-the-art in how visualization systems surface recommended content to users during users' visual analysis is reviewed; a four-dimensional design space for visual content recommendation based on a characterization of prior work is introduced; and key observations regarding common patterns and future research opportunities are discussed.

Story Tracker: Incremental visual text analytics of news story development

A visual analytics system for temporal analysis of news stories in dynamic information streams, which combines interactive visualization and text mining techniques to facilitate the analysis of similar topics that split and merge over time is presented.

Diamonds in the rough: Social media visual analytics for journalistic inquiry

This work presents a visual analytic tool, Vox Civitas, designed to help journalists and media professionals extract news value from large-scale aggregations of social media content around broadcast events.

A Survey on Visual Analytics of Social Media Data

A comprehensive survey to characterize this fast-growing area and summarize the state-of-the-art techniques for analyzing social media data is presented and existing techniques are classified into two categories: gathering information and understanding user behaviors.

Online Visual Analytics of Text Streams

A dynamic Bayesian network model has been developed to derive the tree cuts in the incoming topic trees to balance the fitness of each tree cut and the smoothness between adjacent tree cuts and this approach is evaluated on real-world datasets and the results are generally favorable.

Whisper: Tracing the Spatiotemporal Process of Information Diffusion in Real Time

In Whisper, the collective responses of communities on a given topic are summarized based on how tweets were retweeted by groups of users, through representing the sentiments extracted from the tweets, and tracing the pathways of retweets on a spatial hierarchical layout.

A Visual Backchannel for Large-Scale Events

The Visual Backchannel design provides an evolving, interactive, and multi-faceted visual overview of large-scale ongoing conversations on Twitter, and includes visual saliency for what is happening now and what has just happened in the context of the evolving conversation.

Spatiotemporal social media analytics for abnormal event detection and examination using seasonal-trend decomposition

A visual analytics approach that provides users with scalable and interactive social media data analysis and visualization including the exploration and examination of abnormal topics and events within varioussocial media data sources, such as Twitter, Flickr and YouTube is presented.

Twitinfo: aggregating and visualizing microblogs for event exploration

TwitInfo allows users to browse a large collection of tweets using a timeline-based display that highlights peaks of high tweet activity, and can identify 80-100% of manually labeled peaks, facilitating a relatively complete view of each event studied.

Social Media Visual Analytics

The visual analytics pipeline for the social media is summarized, combining the above categories and supporting complex tasks and with these techniques, social media analytics can apply to multiple disciplines.

OpinionFlow: Visual Analysis of Opinion Diffusion on Social Media

An opinion diffusion model to approximate opinion propagation among Twitter users is developed and an opinion flow visualization that combines a Sankey graph with a tailored density map in one view to visually convey diffusion of opinions among many users is designed.
