The paper describes an explicitly variational modification of standard RSRG method and its application to quantum spin lattice systems. The modified approach is applied to exactly solvable ITF, XX and isotropic Heisenberg models. Better upper bounds for the systems' ground state energy are obtained compared to standard RSRG approach.

Real-space renormalization group methods applied to quantum lattice hamiltonians
I review recent work and some new results, performed in collaboration with G. Sierra, on the Real-Space Renormalization group method applied to quantum spin lattice systems mainly in spatial

A generalization of the numerical renormalization-group procedure used first by Wilson for the Kondo problem is presented. It is shown that this formulation is optimal in a certain sense. As a
A Modified Quantum Renormalization Group for XXZ Spin Chain
A simple modification of the standard Renormalization Group (RG) technique for the study of quantum spin systems is introduced. Our method which takes into account the effect of boundary conditions
Quantum field theories on a lattice: Variational methods for arbitrary coupling strengths and the Ising model in a transverse magnetic field
This paper continues our studies of quantum field theories on a lattice. We develop techniques for computing the low-lying spectrum of a lattice Hamiltonian using a variational approach, without
Quantum scaling in many-body systems
Abstract The theory of quantum critical phenomena is introduced to study some current many-body problems in condensed matter physics. Renormalization group concepts are applied to strongly correlated
PHASE DIAGRAM OF THE ANTIFERROMAGNETIC XXZ MODEL IN THE PRESENCE OF AN EXTERNAL MAGNETIC FIELD
The anisotropic s=1/2 anti-ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in the presence of an external magnetic field is studied by using the standard quantum renormalization group. We obtain the critical line of
Scaling and Renormalization in Statistical Physics
This text provides a thoroughly modern graduate-level introduction to the theory of critical behaviour. Beginning with a brief review of phase transitions in simple systems and of mean field theory,
