Abstract It is usually assumed that being in a group reduces fear in gregarious animals. Hence isolation should prevent exploration and active adaptive strategies. To test this hypothesis in cattle, 24 Aubrac heifers were observed in a novel enclosure either alone ( N = 8) or in groups of four ( N = 4 × 4) for ten daily sessions.
