Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) exert various effects on glial cells as well as on neurons in the brain. The mRNAs for four FGF receptors (FGFR-1-FGFR-4) are expressed in the brain. Although FGFR-1 and -4 mRNAs are preferentially expressed in neurons, FGFR-2 and -3 mRNAs are preferentially expressed in glial cells.
