PPARs are members of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily and are primarily involved in lipid metabolism. The expression patterns of all 3 PPAR isotypes in 22 adult rat organs were analyzed by a quantitative ribonuclease protection assay. The data obtained allowed comparison of the expression of each isotype to the others and provided new insight into the less studied PPAR beta (NR1C2) expression and function. This isotype shows a ubiquitous expression pattern and is the most abundant of…
Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARS): regulators of gene expression in heart and skeletal muscle.
TLDR
The pivotal role of the PPARalpha isoform in cardiac fatty acid metabolism has been confirmed in PPAR alpha-null mice and the exact role of PPARbeta/delta in the regulation of muscle metabolism is still a matter of debate.

Maintenance of Kidney Metabolic Homeostasis by PPAR Gamma
TLDR
The role of PPARγ in renal metabolism is a likely key factor in the maintenance of systemic homeostasis and synthetic agonists ofPPARγ have reno-protective effects both in diabetic and nondiabetic patients.
Regulation of Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptor‐γ in Rat Pituitary
TLDR
New data is provided regarding the regulation of pituitary PPARγ mRNA by hormonal and metabolic status and the mRNA expression was increased in dwarf rats in comparison with Lewis rats.
Downregulation of PPARs and SREBP by acyl-CoA-binding protein overexpression in transgenic rats
TLDR
ACBP acts as an acyl-CoA pool former in transgenic rats and regulates lipid metabolism via SREBP-1 and PPAR regulation through increased AMPK levels, whereas regulation of PPARs seems to be mediated by an AMPK-independent mechanism.

Differential Expression of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-α, -β, and -γ during Rat Embryonic Development.
TLDR
The high and ubiquitous expression of PPARbeta suggests some fundamental role(s) that this receptor might play throughout development, and Interestingly, PPARalpha, -beta and -gamma are coexpressed at high levels in brown adipose tissue.
Dietary lipids regulate β-oxidation enzyme gene expression in the developing rat kidney.
TLDR
Results establish that switching pups from a low- to a high-fat diet for only 1 day was sufficient to induce large increases in cortical LCAD, MCAD, and ACO mRNA levels, and gavage experiments show that this upregulation of β-oxidation gene expression is initiated within 6 h following lipid ingestion.
Expression of the Peroxisome Proliferator-activated Receptor Gene Is Stimulated by Stress and Follows a Diurnal Rhythm (*)
TLDR
Results show that regulation of the PPARα expression levels efficiently modulates PPAR activator signaling and thus may affect downstream metabolic pathways involved in lipid homeostasis.
Peroxisome proliferator–activated receptor α mediates the adaptive response to fasting
TLDR
It is shown that to accommodate the increased requirement for hepatic fatty acid oxidation, PPAR α mRNA is induced during fasting in wildtype mice, indicating that PPARα plays a pivotal role in the management of energy stores during fasting.
Regulation of sterol regulatory element binding proteins in livers of fasted and refed mice.
TLDR
It is concluded that SREBPs are regulated by food consumption in the mouse liver and that the decline in nuclear SREBP-1c upon fasting may explain in part the decrease in mRNAs encoding enzymes of the fatty acid biosynthetic pathway.
Differential expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs): tissue distribution of PPAR-alpha, -beta, and -gamma in the adult rat.
TLDR
This work presents the expression patterns of the PPAR subtypes in the adult rat, determined by in situ hybridization using specific probes for PPAR-alpha, -beta and -gamma, and by immunohistochemistry using a polyclonal antibody that recognizes the three rat PPar subtypes.
Nutritional and insulin regulation of fatty acid synthetase and leptin gene expression through ADD1/SREBP1.
The ability to regulate specific genes of energy metabolism in response to fasting and feeding is an important adaptation allowing survival of intermittent food supplies. However, little is known
Dexamethasone and insulin demonstrate marked and opposite regulation of the steady-state mRNA level of the peroxisomal proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) in hepatic cells. Hormonal modulation of fatty-acid-induced transcription.
TLDR
The results suggest that PPAR mRNA expression is under strict hormonal control and that the fatty acids and hormones affect PPAR RNA levels in a manner analogous to the regulation of the peroxisomal beta-oxidation enzymes.
Peroxisome Proliferator-activated Receptor β Regulates Acyl-CoA Synthetase 2 in Reaggregated Rat Brain Cell Cultures*
TLDR
A selective PPARβ activator is used and it is found that the ACS2 gene is transcriptionally regulated by PPAR β, demonstrating a role forPPARβ in brain lipid metabolism.
Peroxisome Proliferator-activated Receptor α Controls the Hepatic CYP4A Induction Adaptive Response to Starvation and Diabetes*
TLDR
It is unambiguously demonstrated that PPARα is strictly required for hepatic CYP4A induction by starvation and diabetes, and represents the first evidence for the pathophysiologically induced activation of a nuclear receptor.
