Fragile sites on human chromosomes continue to be of significant interest. Witness, for example, the contribution by Smeets et al. (1986) on the fragile site at 3p14. This is a common fragile site at 3p14. It was probably the first common fragile site to be recorded in the literature. Using unbanded chromosomes in 1968, BrOgger observed a high incidence of breaks in chromosome 3 in a region that today corresponds by banding to 3p14 (Sutherland and Hecht 1985).
