}Puumala virus (PUUV) is the causative agent of nephropathia epidemica, a mild form of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. PUUV is transmitted to humans via aerosolized excreta of the infected bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus). Current methods for screening of the PUUV prevalence among bank vole populations are laborious, combining sampling in the field and subsequent analyses in the laboratory. In order to facilitate animal testing, a new serological immunochromatographic rapid test was…

Hantavirus infections in humans and carrier animals neutralisation tests/RNA sequencing are required and it seems likely that many new hantaviruses will be detected in the near future.

This work studied the influence of maternal antibodies against the zoonotic Puumala hantavirus (PUUV) on the fitness of bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) and on PUUV transmission by exposing young maternal antibody-positive and negative (MatAb−) bank Voles to PUUV in experimental populations.

Comparison with the same antigen generated in E. coli showed that both were equally effective in terms of sensitivity and specificity, indicating that either of these proteins can be used in serological tests in Brazil.

Subclinical chronic infections characterized by transient viremia, prolonged virus shedding in oropharyngeal secretions and feces, and virus persistence in tissues developed in laboratory-bred weanling bank voles inoculated intramuscularly with Puumala virus, the etiologic agent of nephropathia epidemica, suggesting that the mechanisms of maintenance and transmission of Puumalo and Hantaan viruses are similar in their respective wild-rodent hosts.

The chance of infection in bank voles captured in a region in northern Sweden endemic for hantavirus was greatest during the peak of the population cycle, implying that the likelihood of exposure to hantvirus increases with increasing population density.
