Antigen receptor ligation-induced apoptosis is thought to play a role in self-tolerance by deleting autoreactive lymphocytes. Antigen receptor ligation-induced apoptosis of mature T cells and T cell lines requires autocrine or paracrine activation of Fas (CD95/APO-1).
